Komodo Liveaboard Once Again

Date: 21 - 28 May 2005
Duration: 8 days

Highlights:

The reefs around Komodo teem with life, a result of the ongoing struggle between the tremendous tidal changes from the north - the Java and Flores Seas - and the fierce currents and heavy swells from the south - the powerful Indian Ocean. The resulting nutrient rich water has created a biological paradise of incomparable splendor. New sites are discovered on virtually every trip. Divers with an open mind for exploration, and a keen eye for interesting critters are guaranteed some of the best diving of their lives.
Divers bound for Komodo will cross the theoretical Wallace line which demarcates the area where Asian and Australian mammals converge. Wallace, a 19th century contemporary of the biologist Charles Darwin, spent years combing the eastern Indonesian islands to determine that here was the most biologically diverse spot on the planet. Like Wallace's land animals - the birds, reptiles, insects and apes - and varied flora, the diversity beneath the turquoise waters is spectacular.
Komodo is undergoing some fantastic changes. The diving is world-class, with dramatic walls, untouched reefs, colossal pelagics, and unusual critters. The Indonesian government, local operators, and conservation agencies are now united to provide enhanced protection for these ecosystems. Moorings will be in place within the year's end. Emergency contacts between the live-aboards have been exchanged in the hopes of advancing safety. And an increase in park patrols is no longer a capricious fantasy, but a bona fide reality that will ensure the reefs get the protection needed.
